At least thirteen passengers killed and ninety-eight hurt in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and management of the country's major public works projects.

The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” stated the country's president.

The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office ended the previous year. This project was closely associated with his administration's economic goals for the southern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The development of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in national projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently raised persistent questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an earlier crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate halt in the building and running of all such projects.

This pause was suggested while awaiting a thorough technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."

In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these national projects.
